Healthy Stress
The Creative's Guide to Thriving Under Pressure
Stress gets a bad rap, doesn’t it? But what if I told you that not all stress is the enemy? In fact, some stress—what I like to call healthy stress—is the unsung hero of our growth, creativity, and survival.
Healthy stress is the kind that pushes you just enough to evolve without breaking you. It’s the gentle tension of knowing you have a deadline but still having the room to craft something meaningful. It’s waking up early to prioritize your errands, projects, or self-care, even when that snooze button is whispering your name. It's the fire that propels you forward, rather than burning you out.
As creatives, we thrive in this sweet spot. Think of a guitar string—too loose, and there’s no sound. Too tight, and it snaps. But when it’s perfectly tuned? That’s where the magic happens.
Stress, in its healthiest form, is part of human nature. It’s what helped our ancestors stay sharp while hunting for food or building shelter. In today’s world, it shows up differently—juggling work deadlines, family responsibilities, or finding time for a workout—but it’s still essential.
Healthy stress gives us purpose, a sense of urgency, and the drive to accomplish something meaningful. Without it, we stagnate. With it, we grow.
Daily Movement: Challenge Yourself
Whether it’s adding weights to your Pilates routine or committing to a long run, physical movement is one of the purest forms of healthy stress. It strengthens not just your body but your mind, teaching you resilience and discipline.
Projects: Personal and Professional Growth
Tackling a passion project or a business goal comes with its own set of stressors. The trick? Break it into manageable chunks, set deadlines, and celebrate small wins along the way. The stress of creation is what makes the result worth it.
Time Management: The Early Bird Gets the Worm
Sometimes, creating healthy stress means setting the alarm earlier than usual to tackle errands or carve out quiet time for yourself. These early hours, when the world is still waking up, are a gift—a chance to focus without distraction.
3a. Time Management: The Night Owl’s AdvantageIf you're not a morning person, don’t force it—lean into your strengths. Late-night hours can be your secret weapon. Sometimes, creating healthy stress means embracing the quiet hours of the night to tackle errands or carve out time for yourself. When the world starts winding down, you get a distraction-free window to focus, reflect, and get things done—no alarm clock required.
While healthy stress is beneficial, it’s crucial to recognize when it’s tipping into the unhealthy zone. Check in with yourself regularly: Are you feeling energized or overwhelmed? Motivated or paralyzed? Adjust accordingly.
Healthy stress is the nudge we all need to step out of our comfort zones and into our potential. It’s the tension that sparks creativity, fuels growth, and reminds us of what we’re capable of. So, the next time you feel that little push of pressure, don’t shy away from it. Lean in. Use it. Thrive.

This resonated with me in more ways than one, as a creative who manages other creatives in a high pressure, fast-paced job. It is so true deadlines drive everything but the strategy is to use them to our advantage! Knowing how to tell the difference between good stress and bad (toxic, chronic) stress is key.
Completely agreed. I need to read this daily
